Art Tip: Eugenio Recuenco at Camera Work

The exhibition 365° shows Eugenio Recuenco’s series of the same title. The Spanish photographer (1968) staged one photograph for each calendar day, which are shown in illuminated lightboxes. Eugenio Recuenco analyses reality and mirrors the society with a keen sense of irony. He uses many references to history, from the late medieval period to current political events. The creation of this series took eight years! A large part will be on view at Camera Work in Berlin from September 28 to November 11.

The series »365°« in Madrid (2018)

I have been following Recuenco’s work since about 2006 or 2007 I reckon. Recuenco’s photographs were always perfectly staged with attention to the smallest details. The styling was on point every single time. I was working as a stylist at the time and I was absolutely fascinated by his work.

Recuenco works a lot in advertisement, he has worked with major brands like Diesel, Yves Saint Laurent, Playstation and Pernod Ricard. His photographs are still bittersweet and the dark sense of humor is always in there somewhere. Every single image tells a story.

Recuenco’s photographs often include references to the history of art. Eugenio Recuenco actually majored in painting and his photographs are just that, aren’t they? Paintings.

NB For those living in Shanghai: there will also be an Eugenio Recuenco expo there from September 28 to January 5 at UNI Elite, South Huangpu Road, Shanghai, China.
